Dr. Sallie Hyman has been practicing equine medicine and surgery nationally and internationally since 1996. She grew up in Northeast Pennsylvania and began riding at the age of four when her parents made the mistake of putting her atop a horse at a local riding stable. She worked her way up through the pony divisions of Zone II riding any and all ponies that were tossed her way. In her later junior years, Dr. Hyman competed in the Medal/Maclay equitation divisions on her mare “Whisper Please.”

Despite spending every free moment at the barn, Dr. Hyman completed high school in just three years and headed off to Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA. There, she earned a B.S. in biology and minored in chemistry and German linguistics. While spending her junior year in Heidelberg, Germany, she worked for a young equine veterinarian named Dr. Kai-Wigand von Salmuth, who later went on to found one of the premier equine veterinary hospitals in Germany.

Dr. Hyman then attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. She received the George M. Palmar prize upon graduation for excellence in equine medicine and surgery. After graduation, she completed a medicine and surgery internship at Reid and Associates in Palm Beach, FL. Following her internship, Dr. Hyman pursued at residency in large animal internal medicine at The University of Pennsylvania New Bolton Center. Here she gained extensive experience in endoscopy, ultrasonography, and radiology, in addition to complicated medical case work-ups. A year of research utilizing the high speed treadmill followed her residency. Research projects included investigation of a novel drug to prevent exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhage, the effects of mechanical muscle massage on lactic acid levels and muscle recovery post exercise, and drug elimination studies. Dr. Hyman gained board certification in Internal Medicine in 2004.

Dr. Hyman has had the pleasure of working in Aiken, S.C., Christchurch, New Zealand, Sydney, Australia, and The Plains, VA (at Virginia Equine Imaging). During these years she has continued to further her veterinary knowledge, becoming certified in equine acupuncture, attending multiple ISELP (International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology) forums on advanced musculoskeletal imaging and lameness evaluation, and lecturing both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Hyman has served as the veterinary consultant for EquestrianCollections.com for the last 4 years, contributing veterinary related articles for the retailer’s website. She also contributes articles to the peer to peer journal DVM360, a monthly magazine for veterinarians.

After several years in solo practice in the northern Virginia area, Dr. Hyman sought to join a team that provided excellence in diagnostics, care, and education. She found this in Total Equine Veterinary Associates and is pleased to be part of a forwarding thinking, progressive, and caring practice.

From Our TEVA Family:

"Dr. Hyman was so calm, collected and thorough in her exam, definitive on the best course of care, and quick to get on the phone and alert the hospital what to expect." - KSM
