licensed veterinary technician

How does a licensed veterinary technician bring value to the client and vet practice?

A licensed veterinary technician (LVT) is like a fully-certified people nurse. They attend specialty veterinary technology training for 2 years, full-time, often after completing 2- to 4- years of college. They complete vigorous annual continuing education and are protected under the veterinarian's liability and insurance policies. They are considered a superbly capable assistant to a veterinarian, relieving the veterinarian of some routine tasks.

Here is what a tech CAN DO for you:

Vaccinations, examinations, give intravenous and intramuscular medications, place catheters, run anesthesia, wound care, bandage changes, apply or remove skin staples or closing sutures, write medical record entries, shockwave, take x-rays, collect blood samples, and ALERT/NOTIFY the doctor to client/patient concerns that need greater attention.

Here is what a tech CAN DO for the practice:

Allow the doctor to focus on the more critical medical issues, work with the doctor at either the same or different farms, administer pre-set treatments and execute plans already prescribed by the doctor. Bring experience and technical expertise to help to lower the overall costs of delivering services to your farm without sacrificing quality care.

Now we can be at two places at once, so appointments stay on schedule and urgent cases are seen promptly.

Here is what a tech CANNOT DO:

A LVT cannot diagnose a disease or condition, prescribe a medication without doctor approval, or treat a condition that hasn't already been documented by the vet. The LVT cannot see new patients, and the patients must have been examined by a doctor in the last 12 months.

Our Vision:

When you call to make an appointment and the nature of the call is routine (like vaccinations), we will ask if you would like a LVT or Doctor Appointment. You may freely choose either. If your pets are healthy and you want to have an appointment sooner, or at a more convenient time for you, and less expensive, you may consider the LVT appointment. If you foresee needing veterinary doctor attention, then please schedule a Doctor appointment. If during a LVT appointment, a veterinary need arises, we can either immediately phone the doctor, or set a brief doctor appointment later that day or soon thereafter with minimal added expense.

A tech on the farm is just like a tech in the vet clinic or a nurse in a hospital. They provide an invaluable service and work in parallel with the doctor. Many techs bring great experience, seasoned intuition, and reasonable perspective to most situations. We are excited to bring our licensed vet techs to you.
